Worcester garage owner fears new apartments could bankrupt his business

A GARAGE owner said he feared a plan to build new apartments in the city center could put his business out of business.

A plan to construct a three-storey ‘modern’ new building opposite the Fownes Hotel in South Street in Worcester with two ground floor commercial units and four two-bed apartments has been proposed by developer Misters Bros.

Neighboring car repairers Miller and Lloyd said building the new units and apartments would “finish” the business.

An objection to the City Walls Road garage plan said: ‘The only access to my business is along South Street. The proposed development would cause problems for my company and could end it.

“Continued access is required along South Street for the business and should the proposed development result in additional vehicles, pedestrians or on-road parking, this would cause access issues for me.

‘There would also be no turning space for the development so vehicles would have to reverse onto City Walls Road which would be dangerous.

“The development would cause many disruptions in the operation of Miller and Lloyd, causing bankruptcy.”

Worcester City Council planners recommended that the plan be rejected by the planning committee when it met at the Guildhall on June 24.

Worcestershire Regulatory Services also raised objection to the plan saying the smell of paint spray in the garage would have a ‘significant’ impact on the people living there and, if built, future complaints about odors could have a negative impact on the workshop.

The objection read: “Given that the paint spraying may be carried out six days a week, this could have a significant impact on the amenities of future occupants of the development, particularly during the summer months when the windows are more likely to be open and balconies are more likely to be used.

“The smell of paint, potentially for several hours a day, would have a significant and detrimental impact on the amenities of future occupants of the development.”

A council planning report suggested that the two units could be removed and replaced by two further apartments.
